'Red Notice' Review: A Pleasant Surprise

Courtesy of Netflix

Red Notice is the latest film to release on Netflix and it stars three Hollywood heavyweights: Dwayne Johnson, Ryan Reynolds, and Gal Gadot. On paper we all knew what this film was going to be. It was going to be a fun action comedy that is fun to watch. The real question is: does it deliver on that promise?

Red Notice does deliver on that promise and even surprises you with some twists and turns. The film is about FBI Agent John Hartley (Dwayne Johnson) taking down two art thieves Nolan Booth (Ryan Reynolds) and The Bishop (Gal Gadot). Hartley takes down Booth pretty easily and enlists his help in taking The Bishop down. This is the ultimate buddy cop movie that is actually funny. Ryan Reynolds as Nolan Booth is gold. His quick wit and comedic timing leaves no dull moments in the film. Dwayne Johnson as John Hartley is his usually charming self who throws a couple of jabs right back to Ryan Reynolds. Their dynamic in the film is what really made the film better than what it should have been. Gal Gadot did pretty well as The Bishop. It was cool to see her in a villain role because I'm used to seeing her as Wonder Woman. I am intrigued to see how she portrays the Evil Queen in the live-action Snow White. The action is decent but won't leave you with your jaw down to the ground. That is what was holding back the film in my opinion. The film had a $200 million budget but felt like a $30 million budget. I expected more cool set pieces and crazier action. The effects didn't look real either and creates a fake feel to the film. This could be due to the COVID pandemic and having to rely on a green screen to create these locations.

There's some twists in Red Notice that I genuinely didn't see coming. I didn't expect this movie to have twists. I thought it would be a straight buddy cop film with no surprises and I was pleasantly surprised. The twists leave you wanting more with these characters and the ending leads to a direction where this could be a franchise. Of course that will be up to Netflix, but I wouldn't be surprised if we see these characters again. I thought this was going to be a typical type of film and it is, but I enjoyed watching this a lot and I actually want there to be a sequel.

Rating: 3.5/5
