After no Marvel Cinematic Universe films in 2020, 2021 gave us the first four films in Phase Four, from the long-overdue Black Widow to the highly anticipated and record-breaking Spider-Man: No Way Home. After Spider-Man: No Way Home lived up to the hype and Shang-Chi and the Legend of Ten Rings caught many by surprise, fans are excited for the future of the MCU. These six upcoming films in 2022 and 2023 currently have release dates and are filming.
6. The Marvels
The Marvels is the least anticipated film on this list. Captain Marvel was kind of average of an MCU film. It felt like belonged in Phase One and Captain Marvel wasn’t well developed. Despite my issues with it, I’m hoping they learn from the mistakes of the previous film. Adding in Ms. Marvel and bringing back Teyonah Parris as an older Monica Rambeau from WandaVision should make this a more interesting movie. The Marvels is currently scheduled for a February 17, 2023 release date.
5. Black Panther: Wakanda Forever
After the Marvels it’s Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. Black Panther is one of my favorite solo films in the MCU, but the death of Chadwick Boseman, the decision to not recast T’Challa, and the uncertainty of the future of this franchise, have made me concerned, as well as the many production delays. Still, I look forward to revisiting Wakanda and the other great characters like Shuri, as well as new characters like Riri Williams, who will eventually become Ironheart in her own Disney + series. Black Panther: Wakanda Forever is currently scheduled for a November 11, 2022 release date.
4. Thor: Love and Thunder
Next on the most anticipation list is Thor: Love and Thunder. Director Taika Waititi brought new light to the Thor franchise with Thor: Ragnarok and hopefully, he continues to do so. Bringing back Natalie Portman’s Jane Foster doesn’t get me super excited, as I felt her character in the first two films was just okay, but hopefully, with a new director, she’ll be better developed. Christian Bale playing the main antagonist Gorr the God Butcher and the inclusion of the Guardians of the Galaxy makes this film highly anticipated. Thor: Love and Thunder is currently scheduled for a July 8, 2022 release date.
3. Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania
The third most anticipated film is Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania. The Ant-Man films have never been the best, nor the biggest MCU films, but have always been entertaining. Paul Rudd as Scott Lang/Ant-Man is one of my personal favorite MCU characters, so I’m always up for more of him. The addition of Jonathon Majors as Kang the Conqueror already makes this the biggest film in the Ant-Man series. Already appearing as a variant called He Who Remains in Loki, Kang is likely going to be the next big antagonist in the MCU. Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania is currently scheduled for a July 28, 2023 release date.
2. Guardians of the Galaxy: Vol. 3
My second most anticipated Marvel Cinematic Universe film is Guardians of the Galaxy: Vol. 3. After getting fired, director James Gunn was rehired to complete his series of Guardians of the Galaxy films. The Guardians of the Galaxy films have been some of the most entertaining and emotional films in the MCU. Gunn took these characters and developed them well in the previous films. Gunn has hinted it will be an emotional film and said this will be his last film in the series. The film will finally introduce the popular Marvel character, Adam Warlock in the MCU, played by Will Poulter. Guardians of the Galaxy: Vol. 3 is currently scheduled for a May 23, 2023 release date.
1. Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness
Finally, the most anticipated Marvel Cinematic Universe film is Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. Sam Raimi is the perfect director for his film with his experience in comic book movies and horror films. Benedict Cumberbatch has gotten better each time he has played Doctor Strange, as well as Elizabeth Olsen as Wanda Maximoff. The film is rumored to have some crazy cameos, including the possible return of Patrick Stewart as Professor X from the original X-Men film series. After Spider-Man: No Way Home brought back legacy Spider-Man actors such as Tobey Maguire, Willem Dafoe, and others, it wouldn’t be a surprise if Stewart returned. Hopefully, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness doesn’t run into the same problem Spider-Man: No Way Home did before it came out, which was having so many plot and character leaks. Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness is currently scheduled for a May 6, 2022 release date.
Ultimately, these films, as well as movies that have been announced, but without a release date and cast, will lead to the next big event film. The next big event film is rumored to be based on Secret Wars, but nothing is confirmed. Hopefully, we get updates on those films as well soon. Marvel understands what its fans want and will continue to deliver.
