CinemaCon Comes With Big Reveals


CinemaCon 2022 wraps up, and with films coming out again in theaters, a lot of big news and new footage is getting audiences excited to return to the theaters. Day one was the Sony Pictures panel. Sony started by celebrating its recent success in theaters with films such as Spider-Man: No Way Home and Ghostbusters: Afterlife. A sequel to Ghostbusters: Afterlife was announced. On the Marvel side of things, a third Venom film and El Muerto were announced. The third animated Spider-Verse film’s title was revealed to be Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse. The first fifteen minutes of Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse were shown as well. Both films are confirmed to have a lot of characters.


Day two was the Warner Brothers reveal. Right away, a sequel to The Batman was announced, once again starring Robert Pattinson and directed by Matt Reeves. There is currently no release date for the upcoming sequel. According to attendees, The Flash showed Michael Keaton back as Batman, Michael Shannon returning as General Zod from Man of Steel, and more of the first look at Sasha Calle as Supergirl. The first look at Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom showed Black Manta, played by Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, as the main antagonist. Other DC films such as Black Adam and Shazam! Fury of the Gods showed footage as well. Attendees got a first look at Barbie, starring Margot Robbie, and Wonka, starring Timothee Chalamet, both slated for 2023.


Day three was Disney and Universal Studios. Kevin Feige revealed he would be attending a Marvel retreat to plan out the next ten years of Marvel films. Attendees got to see the beginning of Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness and the first look at Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. The sequel to Avatar's official name is Avatar: The Way of Water and the first official trailer will be coming out with Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. The first thirty minutes of Lightyear were revealed. From Universal, it was announced that the upcoming film adaptation of Wicked will be split into two films, with part one for 2024 and part two for 2025. Attendees got to see the first look at Jordan Peele’s upcoming film Nope. The first footage of Halloween: Ends was shown.


The last day was focused on Paramount Pictures and Lionsgate. Top Gun: Maverick was screened at CinemaCon and got a good reception from the attendees. Footage of Babylon, Transformers: Rise of the Beasts, and Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves were shown. It was also revealed that Tobey Maguire will play Charlie Chaplin in Babylon. The prequel to The Hunger Games, The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes, will be adapted to film and has a release date of November 17, 2023. No cast and crew were announced yet. A spinoff to John Wick called Ballerina was announced with Ana De Armas as the lead. Filming will begin this summer for Ballerina. Footage of John Wick 4 was also shown.


All in all, a lot of exciting and anticipated films are coming out in the next few years. Many exciting films are coming out and will hopefully get people back to the theaters. Whether it’s comic book movies or sequels to franchises such as Avatar and Ghostbusters, the theater experience is not going away anytime soon.
